Abstract

This research paper deals with the issue of housing and specifically minimum housing. Minimum housing, also known as micro-housing, is a type of housing unit that provides the basic amenities required for living in a compact space, however it can vary depending on cultural, social and economic factors. Small dwellings as history reveals have been prevalent since prehistoric times and continue to be an important aspect of modern living. 20th century architects such as Le Corbusier, Klein, May have left a legacy in the history of architecture, with their design being a space saving model even until today. Their ideas were widely known through the international C.I.A.M. architecture conferences. The reason for this topic is the ever-increasing demand for affordable and sustainable housing, especially in urban areas where space is limited. A further reason is the small scale which is presented as a contemporary housing challenge that architects are called upon to address. This research paper aims to understand the importance of minimal living and the possibilities it offers in the modern times. Through an analysis of examples of small dwellings in Europe and Asia, it aims to study the architectural solution in terms of spatial qualities, inventiveness, functionality and sustainability. The paper is structured in three parts, the first describes the historical development of the minimal dwelling, from it’s first appearance until today. In the second part the study continues with the analysis of examples of small houses in difficult space conditions with several constraints, and the solutions given by architects worldwide. Finally, the third part presents the conclusions of this research and the answers to the following questions posed. How can small dwellings in cities be made functional and sustainable? How can dwellings with minimal dimensions acquire a spatial interest?
