Abstract

This Thesis focuses on the study and application of the Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM) methodology in the documentation, analysis, and management of Cultural Heritage (CH) building. As a case study, the Ducal Palace of Gubbio (Palazzo Ducale di Gubbio) in Umbria, Italy, was selected; an emblematic Renaissance structure that combines both medieval and Renaissance architectural elements and is attributed to famous architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini. The research explores the limitations and potentials of parametric modeling using the parametric BIM software REVIT for primary and secondary architectural elements of the Palace, along with the integration of historical documentation, including archival records, architectural drawings, and photographs. The goal is to develop digital HBIM model that provides not only geometric information but also semantic data related to the historical data of the courtyard and facades of the Palazzo Ducale di Gubbio. The emphasis on Level of Detail (LOD) during the design process, as well as the assessment of accuracy of the BIM through the deviation analysis constitute a traditional and well-established methodology for the successful creation of the HBIM model. Finally, the methodology is critically examined in terms of its effectiveness and limitations when applied to CH, highlighting both its potential and the challenges.
