Σύγχρονη γλωσσολογική θεωρία και διδασκαλία της γλώσσας: Διερεύνηση του επιπέδου κατανόησης βασικών γραμματικών όρων και εννοιών από φοιτητές και φοιτήτριες
Abstract
This study investigates how well first-year students in a Primary Education Department understand terms and concepts related to verb types. It draws on responses from final exams in a compulsory course focused on key grammatical phenomena in Greek and on the comparative analysis of traditional and official school grammars. Open-ended questions incorporating verbs in propositional structures were used for both quantitative and qualitative analysis. The findings indicate that students struggle with the concept of aspect, particularly as it is presented in official school grammars, while showing greater familiarity with traditional grammatical terminology. They also demonstrate limited understanding of the distinction between tense and aspect in the subjunctive mood and appear unfamiliar with its interpretation as a ‘tenseless’ form. Furthermore, the findings indicate a strong influence of established grammatical perceptions, confusion between verbal aspect and other verbal categories, and insufficiently developed linguistic reasoning skills. These results emphasize the need for clearer, more detailed explanations of verbal system concepts, alongside a more reflective approach to grammar instruction.
