Η γλωσσική διαμάχη στην παγκαλική δικτατορία. Αλληλογραφία Λ. Πολίτη και Δ. Πετροκόκκινου με τον Ψυχάρη = Language conflict during the Pangalos dictatorship. Linos Politis’ correspondence with Psicharis
Abstract
This article examines previously unpublished correspondence, aiming to contribute to the understanding of the social and political dynamics surrounding the Greek language question in the 1920s, and especially during Pangalos’ dictatorship. The analysis is mainly based on the letters of Linos Politis to the pioneer demoticist Psicharis, and on a comparative reading of them with the correspondence between Psicharis and Dimitris Petrokokkinos and the press of the era. The long-standing communication between Psicharis and the Politis family, on which the special relationship between the aged mentor and the young student Linos was built, is also highlighted. Functioning as informants on both the individual and the collective, the letters constitute a fertile field for micro-historical narratives for the period under investigation. In such a context, they are seen both as concise personal accounts that reflect the style, emotions, and choices of their authors, and as raw material for tracing aspects of the history of Greek (student) youth in the interwar period.
