Τρία σαιξπηρικά ποιήματα της Ζωής Καρέλλη = Three Shakespearean poems by Zoi Karelli
Abstract
This paper examines the reception of Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the poetry of Zoi Karelli, focusing on three poems from the period 1940-1955. It analyses the timeless fascination with the Shakespearean hero as a symbol of existential angst, inner conflict and philosophical contemplation. It examines the influence of Hamlet as an intertextual element and its existential dimension as presented by Karelli in the light of existentialism. At the same time, the notions of memory, death and identity are examined, as is the way in which literature shapes and changes interpretations of Shakespeare’s work over time. Through this perspective, Karelli’s poetry is presented as a site of philosophical reflection in conversation with global literary and ideological concerns.
