Abstract

This paper introduces Post-Inspection Analysis (PIA), a concept for understanding and reverse engineering balanced equations of similar reactions. Here we explore the idea that balanced equations contain useable information observed by grouping and analysing similar equations, allowing us to uncover observations that support the teaching of the balancing process and aid the formalisation of algorithms or methods applicable to families of equations. Through this framework, logical relationships and proportional consistencies that define entire families of reactions are revealed. Applied to acidic redox and acid–base neutralisation (ABN) systems, the concept generalises established methods (such as the oxidation-number (ON) method for certain redox systems and the ionic half-reaction/equation method for ABN reactions) and provides a foundation for deriving new methods and procedures (such as the Poly-Var Algorithm for the core ABN reaction). PIA therefore offers a conceptual lens for analysing balanced equations distinct from existing generalised approaches. This study contributes to the understanding and overall teaching of the balancing process.
