Nephroprotective Effects of Juniperus Sabina L. Essential Oil against Gentamicin-Induced Toxicity in Rats
Abstract
This study investigates the protective potential of Juniperus Sabina L. essential oil against renal damage caused by gentamicin, a common antibiotic known for its nephrotoxic side effects. The chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed using GC-MS, identifying Sabinene as a primary constituent. Rats were divided into a control group (gentamicin-induced) and treatment groups receiving 160 mg/kg and 320 mg/kg of the extract. Histopathological examination revealed that the control group exhibited severe tubular necrosis and degeneration. Treatment with 160 mg/kg of J. Sabina extract showed no significant pathological changes, indicating strong protection. The 320 mg/kg dose also demonstrated minimal degeneration and an absence of necrosis, although slight inflammatory cell infiltration was observed around renal tubules. The findings suggest that J. Sabina essential oil possesses significant nephroprotective properties, effectively attenuating structural damage induced by gentamicin.
