An Open Data Approach for Comparing CO2 Capture Materials
Abstract
Recent advances in CO2 capture research have produced a wide range of sorbent materials with diverse properties and sorption parameters, making direct comparison increasingly challenging. In this minireview, we assess representative CO2 capture materials reported between 2020 and 2025 and show that material class alone is no longer a reliable indicator of performance, as different sorbents increasingly overlap in their operational parameter space. Instead, performance must be evaluated using process-relevant, standardized descriptors that reflect realistic operating conditions. To address this need, we suggest an open data approach that compiles comparable and consistently reported metrics for CO2 sorbents, including capacity, enthalpy, kinetics, stability, and indicative cost. By considering the full capture profile of a material rather than a single sorption parameter, this approach enables transparent, multidimensional comparison and supports application-oriented material selection beyond static benchmarking.
