Abstract

Purpose: The rapid incursion of artificial intelligence, the ongoing pursuit of sustainable financial models, and the fierce competition with social media for audience attention are among the most pressing challenges journalism faces today. This article describes not only the emerging jobs in contemporary newsrooms but also the educational requirements for these positions, the work dynamics they entail, their core functions, and the perceived skill sets needed to perform them effectively. Methodology: This study employed qualitative interviewing: fifteen journalists from the five Colombian regions with the largest concentration of mass media outlets responded to a semi-structured questionnaire. Results and conclusions: Findings indicate that current journalism demands a combination of editorial, technical, administrative, and commercial competencies. Original contributions: These results help bridge a gap in South American scholarship on emerging journalism jobs, a field largely dominated by literature reviews from the Global South and by empirical studies from the Global North.
