Abstract

This chapter explores synergistic approaches in geriatric rehabilitation, emphasizing the need for holistic, multidisciplinary, and client-centered care to address the complexities of ageing. With global demographic shifts leading to an unprecedented rise in the elderly population, rehabilitation strategies such as reablement, restorative care, and rehabilitation (3R approaches) are vital in promoting independence, functional ability, and quality of life. The discussion highlights key considerations in ageing, including physical, cognitive, musculoskeletal, and psychosocial changes, along with common geriatric syndromes and their rehabilitation needs. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and smart technologies is emerging as a transformative approach in this field supporting assessment, personalized treatment planning, tele- tele-rehabilitation, and outcome monitoring. AI–driven tools enhance clinical decision- making, improve efficiency, and empower older adults to participate actively in their care through guided intervention. The role of technology, cultural and societal contexts, and policy frameworks is explored to illustrate how innovation and inclusivity can enhance care. Special focus is placed on the occupational therapy perspective, which prioritizes meaningful participation, dignity, and autonomy in later life. The chapter concludes by emphasizing future directions such as AI community-based care, rehabilitation systems, and standardized frameworks for geriatric rehabilitation.
