Abstract

In this work, organic single crystals of 2-amino 4,6-dimethyl pyrimidine 4-nitrophenol (AMP4N) grown by the immersed Sankaranarayanan Ramasamy (ISR) method and tri-glycine sulfate (TGS) grown by the SR method were sliced into cylindrical cuts with different thicknesses. Both the materials exhibit different band gap values and transmittance onset as compared with each other. Ultra-violet filtering capabilities (UFC) of all the single crystal cuts were studied under UV (352 nm) illumination using a custom- made experimental setup. Our experiments reveal that the percentage of UFC increases with the thickness of single crystal cuts. An eight-millimetre thick AMP4N single crystal cut exhibits superior UV filtering capabilities (95.5%) because of optimum thickness, energy band gap, and transmittance onset wavelength (390 nm) as compared with 5.6% obtained for the TGS single crystal cut. Due to the higher band gap and lower transmittance onset wavelength (235 nm) majority of illuminated UV photons were transmitted by the TGS crystal cuts, and they are all captured by the BPW-34 photodiodes present in the experimental setup, which yields more photocurrent. These results explore the possibilities of using cost-effective organic AMP4N single crystal cuts as UV filters.
