APPLICATIONS OF NONLINEAR OPTICAL EFFECTS IN OPTOELECTRONICS
Abstract
Nonlinear Optics (NLO) has emerged as a cornerstone of modern optoelectronics, enabling device functionalities that extend beyond the linear interaction of light with matter. The nonlinear response of advanced materials under high-intensity illumination provides mechanisms for ultrafast signal control, data processing, and secure information handling. This chapter explores four pivotal device applications of nonlinear optics: optical limiting, optical switching, optical logic gates, and optical data storage using diffraction gratings. Optical limiting ensures sensor and eye protection against intense laser beams, while optical switching underpins ultrafast data routing in communication networks. Optical logic gates harness nonlinear interactions to realize all-optical computing, eliminating electronic bottlenecks. Diffraction-based optical data storage leverages grating-mediated light modulation for high-density, high-speed, and rewritable memory solutions. By presenting both the conceptual framework and experimental methodologies, this chapter highlights how nonlinear optical effects translate into practical optoelectronic technologies that are central to photonics, telecommunications, and information processing.
