Abstract

Oneiromancy books are works that interpret dreams based on symbology. These interpretations derive from religious, mythological and cultural references from old civilizations like Mesopotamia, Assyria and Babylonia. In addition, these books offer important insights into the belief systems, values, judgments and mentality of the time. As a literary genre, many translations and compilations have been written. One such text, titled “Tabirname (Oneiromanteia),” was published in the magazine Mektebü’l Fennun-i Meşriki. Evangelinos Misailidis translated the book into Karamanlidika from a French-Greek version originally written in French, without providing further information about the source. His translation was written in Turkish using Greek letters to reach the common people. It employed clear and simple language, lacking any artistic style. This study initially aimed to provide general information about the Ottoman intellectual Evangelinos Misailidis, one of the prominent figures in Karamanlidika literature, and his magazine Mektebü’l Fennun-i Meşriki. Then, it focused on the content, structure, language and the style of the “Tabirname (Oneiromanteia).” Subsequently, the Greek-scripted Turkish text was transcribed into Latin letters, and a glossary was prepared. In conclusion, the importance of identifying and publishing oneiromancy books in a literary, linguistic, and cultural history research framework was emphasized.
