Abstract

Mongolia is rich in historical artifacts belonging to the ancient Turkic and Uyghur peoples. Among these, inscriptions and related cultural traditions are unique. To date, eleven inscriptions from five sites belongs four soums in the province of Dundgovi, which is located in southern region of Mongolia have been registered. In this artıcle, we present the tamgas belonging to the inscriptions at Del Uul and our view on the formation of the third inscription. In 1987, the first inscription in Del Uul was discovered by Khüükhenbaatar Dashdavaa and Sanjmyatav Tovuudorj and deciphered by Boldbaatar Yundenbat and Battulga Tsend. The second, third and fourth inscriptions at Del Uul were discovered and studied by Battulga Tsend in 1997 and published as a scientific article in 1998. Fifth inscription was found in 2014 by Ariyajav Batchuluun, a lecturer at the National University of Mongolia, during the internship of students. It was analyzed and decoded by Assoc.Prof. Dr. Azzaya Badam, and a research article was published. Our research team examined the inscription in situ in 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020. Based on our data, the formation of the Del Uul III inscription is highly questionable and has not been emphasized in previous research.
