A Scheduling Experience for Engoo Tutors — UX Design for Platform-based Gig Work
Abstract
This thesis explores how UX design can improve scheduling experiences for gig workers within platform-based work environments, using Engoo, an online English tutoring platform, as a case study. Gig workers, such as Engoo’s online tutors, face unique challenges in managing their availability, often operating within structures that lack the familiarity and stability of traditional employment. This research investigates how to balance platform constraints with the needs of workers who value flexibility, autonomy, and visibility in their schedules. Through a literature review, a state of the art analysis of scheduling platforms, and semi-structured interviews with Engoo tutors and stakeholders, the study identifies key pain points and decision-making behaviours related to scheduling. Insights from this research inform an iterative design process, resulting in a set of design criteria and a prototype aimed at fostering autonomy, supporting flexible planning, and improving clarity within the scheduling experience.
