First data on the carnivoran from the Early Miocene of Mokrá-Quarry sites (Moravia, Czech Republic)
Abstract
We study the fauna of Carnivora from the Early Miocene (MN4) Mokrá-Quarry sites in Moravia (Czech Republic).Carnivorans are rare findings in the Mokrá sites, as well as in other MN4 localities in Europe, and thus, every new data provides an interesting piece of knowledge on its evolutionary history.Dental and appendicular elements from three Mokrá fissures, MWQ1/2001, MWQ2/2003 and MCQ3/2005 are thoroughly described here and referred to at least 7 different taxa. The dental material belongs to six different genera: the ailurid Alopecocyon sp., the amphicyonid Cynelos sp., the procyonid Angustictis mayri, the viverrid Viverrictis sp., the herpestid Forsythictis aurelianensis and the mustelid Dehmictis musili nov.sp.The postcranial elements, due to their fragmentary nature, were less informative and have been assigned to Alopecocyon sp., Mustelidae indet., Viverridae indet., Feliformia indet., and cf.Proailurus sp.These results increase the diversity of the European Early Miocene Carnivoran guild with a new species of a small mustelid (Dehmictis musili), but also provide new information on previously unknown postcranial elements of the rare ailurid Alopecocyon sp.
