Forests of New York, 2023: FIA annual snapshot
Abstract
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Forest Service, Forest Inventor y and Analysis (FIA) program provides this resource update annually as an overview of forest resources in New York. These estimates are derived fr om field data collected across a systematic network of fixed-radius for est monitoring plots located on both public and private land.New updates ar e provided annually as a subset of plots within the State are remeasured.Dat a used in this update were accessed from the FIA database on 26 March 2025.Forest land area by county 76-100% 51-75% 26-50% 0-25% Forest Inventory and Analysis Overview: New York, 2023 Each year, field crews visit and measure a subset of all FIA plots across t he entire State (the size of the subset varies by State and year).Combining al l of the subsets creates a full State inventory used in this snapshot. The l ast year of the most recent full inventory is the year shown in the title.5,300 total plots in the full State inventory 2,965 of those plots contain forest land Forest Area: New York, 2023 Sampled land area: 30,081,955 acres Forest land area: 18,531,719 acres (±0.63%SE*) Timberland area: 15,318,696 acres (±0.80%SE) * SE is sampling error 0% 100% 62% of sampled land area is covered by forest Forest Composition: New York, 2023 Sound total-stem bark and wood volume of liv e trees (≥5.0 in.diameter) on forest land: 62,841,488,275 cubic feet (±1.12%SE) Top species by volume % of total red maple (Acer rubrum) * Differences between estimates includes physical changes (cutting/growth), land-use change, and change in protocol.18,673,171 acres 18,531,719 acres Forest land area 2018 2023 59,891,492,033 cubic feet 62,841,488,275 cubic feet Forest land volume Sound total-stem bark and wood volume of live trees ≥5.0 in.diameter 11,718,750,123 trees 11,504,833,605 trees Number of live trees on forest land Live trees ≥1.0 in.diameter 2,073,707,445 metric tons 2,104,151,736 metric tons Total forest land carbon storage Terms ExplainedAdditional terminology can be found in the FIA Glossary.
