Forests of Utah, 2022: FIA annual snapshot
Abstract
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program provides this resource update annually as an overview of forest resources in Utah. These estimates are derived from field data collected across a systematic network of fixed-radius forest monitoring plots located on both public and private land.New updates are provided annually as a subset of plots within the State are remeasured.Data used in this update were accessed from the FIA database on 25 September 2025.Forest land area by county 76-100% 51-75% 26-50% 0-25% Forest Inventory and Analysis Overview: Utah, 2022 Each year, field crews visit and measure a subset of all FIA plots across the entire State (the size of the subset varies by State and year).Combining all of the subsets creates a full State inventory used in this snapshot. The last year of the most recent full inventory is the year shown in the title.9,171 total plots in the full State inventory 3,066 of those plots contain forest land Forest Area: Utah, 2022 Sampled land area: 52,810,266 acres Forest land area: 17,869,605 acres (±0.91%SE*) Timberland area: 3,566,179 acres (±3.23%SE) * SE is sampling error 0% 100% 34% of sampled land area is covered by forest Forest Composition: Utah, 2022 Sound total-stem bark and wood volume of live trees (≥5.0 in.diameter) on forest land: 16,189,473,943 cubic feet (±1.99% SE) Top species by volume % of total Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) * Differences between estimates includes physical changes (cutting/growth), land-use change, and change in protocol.18,028,696 acres 17,869,605 acres Forest land area 2017 2022 7,024,876,179 trees 6,734,345,594 trees Number of live trees on forest land Live trees ≥1.0 in.diameter 16,958,978,575 cubic feet 16,189,473,943 cubic feet Forest land volume Sound total-stem bark and wood volume of live trees ≥5.0 in.diameter 1,102,812,152 metric tons 1,089,397,556 metric tons Total forest land carbon storage Terms ExplainedAdditional terminology can be found in the FIA Glossary.
