Abstract

Aging is a stage that brings multiple changes, including the risk of cognitive decline and depression, which can negatively impact the quality of life in older adults. This study aimed to identify cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms in older adults from the Buenavista Parish, in order to apply cognitive stimulation techniques to strengthen mental capacities and prevent functional decline. A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional approach was used. The sample consisted of 37 older adults assessed with the Pfeiffer questionnaire and the Yesavage Geriatric Depression Scale before and after an intervention based on cognitive stimulation workshops. Results showed that 86.48% had normal cognitive function, while 13.52% presented some level of impairment. Regarding emotional status, 59.46% showed signs of probable or established depression. A relationship was found between cognitive decline and depressive symptoms, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive nursing interventions to promote active and healthy aging.
