Abstract
Cohesive soils require specialized handling due to their problematic characteristics. Clayey soils, in particular, exhibit poor engineering properties, necessitating improvement in their stability and soil bearing capacity. Numerous structural failures have occurred due to construction on expansive clay. A common manifestation of this issue is the widespread damage of pavement structures, which can be attributed to the inadequate bearing capacity of expansive clays. This study aims to identify the factors affecting compressive strength values and crack patterns, with respect to variations in compaction density, moisture content, and the thickness of compacted layers. Density variations were achieved by altering the compaction energy, while moisture content was adjusted to three levels: dry side, at OMC, and wet side. The thickness of each compacted layer was regulated based on the mass of soil used per layer. The results indicated that soils compacted at OMC exhibited higher UCS values. Moreover, a reduction in the mass of soil per compaction layer corresponded to an increase in UCS, likely due to a more uniform distribution of weight across layers. The most severe structural failure was observed in the second layer across all weight variations, with the center of failure occurring within the middle layer
