Abstract

Abstract Akkermansia muciniphila is a resident bacterium of the gastrointestinal tract. Since its discovery, it has attracted considerable interest within the scientific community due to its role in metabolism and human health. Its reduction at the intestinal level is associated with diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. Several mechanisms have been identified throughout which it helps to maintain the balance of the intestinal epithelium. Animal and human studies have shown that the administration of A. muciniphila is associated with improvements in biochemical profiles and reduced inflammation, making it a probiotic with great therapeutic potential.
