ENHANCING FABRIC FEEL: ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF SILK, COTTON, PINEAPPLE YARNS, AND THEIR SILK BLENDS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF UNION HANDLOOM BANARASI SAREES
Abstract
Purpose: The present study is an attempt to assess the effect of blending of silk with cotton and pineapple fibers on the tactile performance and physical properties of traditional Banarasi handloom sarees. The research is seeking sustainable options that increase both comfort and luxury to keep these iconic textiles relevant and desirable. Methodology/Design: Nine handloom saree samples of Brocade, Tanchoi and Butti types were woven with specific unions of silk, cotton and pineapple fibres. Quantitative data related to tactile perception was obtained by measuring GSM, thickness, thread count and the objective fabric feel factor using ASTM standard protocols and a Fabric Feel Tester. Findings: The addition of pineapple fibers with silk increases the GSM and thickness, providing a better tactile comfort which is luxurious for all type of sarees. The silk/pineapple blends registered the highest score in the fabric feel factor, which confirms its potential in enhancing the sensory quality and aesthetic value of the traditional handloom sarees. Practical and Social Implications: These findings will enable artisans and designers to increase the market for Banarasi sarees by using sustainable, eco-friendly fiber blends. The approach provides a practical way forward for innovation in India’s traditional handloom sector, helping to preserve cultural heritage and meet modern consumer demand for green luxury. Originality: This is the first research work to evaluate pineapple fiber blends in Banarasi sarees objectively, combining traditional craftsmanship with innovative material science. This research is thus the first step in the quantification of the tactile improvements thereby laying the foundation for sustainable luxury textiles and future innovations in the handloom industry.
