Artificial Intelligence and Radiomics to Enhance the Quality of Future Multidisciplinary Team Tumour Boards
Abstract
Multidisciplinary team (MDT) tumour boards are forums in which specialists from multiple oncology disciplines collaborate to discuss treatment plans and provide evidence-based cancer care.1 These forums enable detailed discussions to recommend individualised treatment plans for cancer patients; however, MDTs face an increasing burden due to the growing number of cancer cases. To improve the efficiency and workflow of MDT tumour board meetings, innovative solutions are needed. In modern-day oncology, the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and radiomics has transformed decision-making processes in multidisciplinary cancer care. 2 AI enables computer systems to perform tasks that mimic intelligent human behaviours. This includes the capacity of computer systems to identify patterns, produce predictive models, and generate decision-support tools that can provide deeper insights into complex oncological datasets. There is increasing use of AI in oncology to analyse large and complex clinical data, such as radiological images, medical records, and molecular profiles, to improve both treatment planning and diagnostic precision.3 Radiomics has become a non-invasive tool in precision oncology. It involves extraction of large amounts of quantitative data from medical images (i.e., CT, MRI, or PET). 4 Tumour characteristics such as shape, texture, margins, and density exhibit nuances that may not be visually apparent to the human eye.4 AI allows a rapid and unbiased digital analysis of radiomic features in medical imaging. The predictive potential improves by using machine learning algorithms, and, as a result, advanced models can be developed to facilitate the formation of clinical decision-support tools.A more detailed preview of these large datasets reveals information related to tumour biology, prognosis, and probable responses to various therapies.
