Abstract
Abstract: The Church as the “pillar and foundation of the truth” and the “mystery of godliness,” manifested in Christ, constitute the theological core of 1 Tim 3:14-16. This pericope offers a Christological and ecclesiological synthesis that has resonated in central themes of Pope Francis’s magisterium. Although no direct citations of it are found in his homilies, catecheses, or official documents, one can perceive, in various of his interventions, the reappropriation of its main elements: the evangelizing mission of the Church, the centrality of the incarnation of Christ, and the proclamation of the truth lived out in charity, in and through the Church. His proposal of a “Church which goes forth” (Evangelii Gaudium 24) and of a merciful Church, one that goes out to meet the peripheries and promotes a culture of encounter, reflects a pastoral understanding of the ecclesial mission as a promoter and cooperator of the truth (Gal 2:5, 14; 3 John 8). This study also examines how 1 Tim 3:14-16 and Francis’s ecclesiology resonate in Bishop Robert Prevost, his successor, Pope Leo XIV, in order to envision the ecclesiological horizons of his pontificate. The article presents the segmentation and translation of 1 Tim 3:14-16; an analysis of the pericope using the Historical-Critical Method, including textual criticism, textual constitution, and form criticism. Through exploratory and bibliographic research, it offers an exegetical-theological commentary on the text, as well as the ecclesiology of Francis and that of Prevost. By means of a dialogical reading of the biblical text alongside the magisterium of Francis and Leo XIV, the study seeks to demonstrate the contemporary relevance of the Pauline vision for a missionary, merciful, incarnational, and solidaristic ecclesiology that truly is the “pillar and foundation of the truth.” Keywords: Church; Truth; Francis; Timothy; Biblical Theology.
