Research on Temporary Support Design Using Novel Socket-Type Scaffolding for Roof Trusses in Thai Airport
Abstract
The development project of Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Thailand is characterized by its large scale and tight construction schedule. The installation of the large-span steel roof trusses required extensive lattice support systems. However, local resource constraints in Thailand made procuring such a volume of lattice supports impossible.Additionally, lattice supports could not be installed in certain areas with hollow core slabs.Addressing the local context through investigation, comparative studies, and expert review, a novel sockettype scaffolding system was proposed and implemented as temporary support for the roof trusses. This solution effectively overcame the challenges of insufficient resources (machinery and materials). The proposed support system offers significant advantages, including light weight, rapid assembly/disassembly, material efficiency, low cost, elimination of large machinery requirements, and avoidance of critical path delays. This paper details the structural configuration, construction sequence, and key operational aspects of the novel socket-type scaffolding.Furthermore, it presents research on the zoned unloading technique for the temporary supports based on computational analysis. The successful completion and operation of this project provide valuable reference for the construction of similar large-span steel truss projects overseas.
