Abstract

The rapid growth of global urbanisation, sustainability has become a vital aspect to consider.Due to the increasing population growth, food production demands have risen, it made to the development of high-yielding varieties of crops and innovative production of food techniques. This study explores the compatibility of hydroponic systems with urbanised societies.Hydroponics involves growing plants in a controlled environment, requiring less space with no soil.In this experiment, greywater used as plants growing medium.Selected vegetable, ornamental plants were planted to assess their growth, pest resistance, and yield under hydroponic conditions. The study was conducted at both indoor and outdoor lab-scale levels.Water quality parameters such as pH, TS, COD, BOD were analysed to determine the pollutant removal efficiency of the greywater.Greywater sourced from the college canteen was utilised in the system. This research indicates that hydroponic systems are well-suited for modern urban infrastructure, supporting the principles of a circular economy and SDG 6.Furthermore, hydroponic application is eco-friendly and sustainable system to enhance the aesthetic of the surroundings as well as to improve the water quality.
