A Novel Type Curve for Sandstone Rock Typing
Abstract
Rock typing in heterogeneous sandstone reservoirs remains challenging due to complex pore architectures shaped by depositional and diagenetic processes. This study introduces a pore geometry structure (PGS) crossplot that integrates geological and engineering perspectives to improve rock typing. Analysis of multiple sandstone data sets shows that data consistently cluster into distinct groups, each with unique geological features, and that their fitting lines converge at a single point. This convergence forms the basis of a new type curve that captures systematic relationships between pore geometry and structure. The proposed method was validated across independent data sets and shown to outperform the conventional hydraulic flow unit (HFU) approach in accuracy and consistency of capillary pressure prediction. By linking pore system architecture to geological controls, the PGS type curve provides a practical and robust tool for sandstone rock typing and enhances reservoir characterization.
