Abstract

After the first multiplication of the loaves and fishes, the evangelist John writes (John 6:15) that the Jews wanted to proclaim Jesus King of Israel and that He rejected the offer. John is the only evangelist to allude to the episode, many years after the event. This article aims to recall the several events that, according to Maria Valtorta (1897—1961), an Italian writer and mystic—who claimed to have received visions of the life of Jesus— occurred near Tarichaea, a town on the southwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee that the evangelists omit to mention, where the miracle of the loaves and fishes also took place. The article is ideally divided into two parts: the first, after a biography of Maria Valtorta, reports historical, geographical and meteorological information on the Sea of Galilee. The second part presents textual excerpts from The Gospel as It was Revealed to Me, Maria Valtorta's major literary work, and a review of her writings to assess their plausibility. These textual excerpts constitute the "data" on which the article is based. Maria Valtorta redefines the geography of crucial Christian sacred sites, which are not located where the so—called Tradition says. Her writings are not at all helpful, and in fact harmful, for a deeply Catholic writer, like she was, to be "recognized" by the Catholic Church.
