The formation of Russian educational mathematical publications: from manuscripts to printed books (late 17th – early 18th century)
Abstract
The study aims to reveal the phenomenon of the formation of Russian educational mathematical publications in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The article examines the historical experience of the development of these publications during this period, which represents a qualitatively new stage in the evolution of the printed form of educational mathematical books. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that it is the first one to describe, systematize, and generalize knowledge regarding the formation of educational mathematical printed publications. Based on an analysis of a sample of Russian printed mathematical textbooks, the leading trends in their development are uncovered within a historical retrospection for the first time. A complex of factors influencing the formation of these publications, previously not studied in their entirety, is examined. As a result of investigating a specially curated corpus of sources, the trends and factors of the formation of Russian educational mathematical publications in the late 17th and early 18th centuries are identified. The study also highlights the specificity of the authorial corps of mathematical publications during this timeframe and draws historical parallels.
