Strategies for translating Chuvash poetry in Russian and English linguocultures (based on L. Filippova’s poem “Ҫеҫпӗл йӗрӗпе”)
Abstract
The research aims to establish systemic patterns in the translation of poetic texts from the minority Chuvash language into Russian and English. The research material is L. I. Filippova’s poem “Ҫеҫпӗл йӗрӗпе”. The study focuses on a comparative analysis of a fragment of the Chuvash poem and its Russian and English versions. The research identifies various translation strategies, ranging from semantic proximity to the original to creative transformations and interpretations. The scientific novelty lies in the development of a taxonomy of translation solutions for conveying culturally specific concepts, poetic images, and the emotional-semantic dominant of Chuvash-language poetry within Russian and English linguocultures. As a result of the study, a spectrum of key translation strategies characteristic of Chuvash-Russian and Chuvash-English poetic pairs was established, from the precise transliteration of proper names to the creative transformation of images. It was determined that each translation forms a unique emotional-semantic dominant. The Russian translation is characterized by the romanticization and conceptualization of images within a cultural paradigm familiar to the Russian reader. Conversely, the English translation is marked by dramatization, emotional expressiveness, and the somatization of experiences, aimed at creating an immediate impact on an international audience.
