Motivational models in the dialectal lexicon of the Yakut language (by the example of denominations of constructive types of Yakut fences)
Abstract
The aim of the study is to identify motivational models in dialectal denominations of constructive types of fences in the Yakut language. The analytical material comprises a corpus of more than 50 lexical items extracted from lexicographic sources and the author’s field data. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the development of a system of motivational models for the nomination of Yakut fence types. As a result of a semantic-motivational analysis, three principal nomination models underlying the terminological system were distinguished. The first model, “Material and Constructive Element”, groups denominations that directly indicate the components used (poles, stakes, braces). The second, “Functional Purpose”, includes lexemes denoting the structure’s intended use (enclosure for livestock, fencing for a haystack, boundary fence). The third model, “Spatial Organization”, covers names reflecting features of location, shape, or method of installation. The results demonstrate that this lexical layer constitutes an ordered system closely connected to the traditional economic practices of the Yakut people. This systematization permits the reconstruction of key fragments of Yakut material culture.
