Constructive features of the generic nature of contemporary English-language media discourse (based on media texts of the “features” genre)
Abstract
The study aims to identify the constructive characteristics of the genre-forming mechanisms of contemporary English-language media discourse within media texts of the “features” genre. The scientific novelty consists in substantiating that such characteristics as individuality (intentionality), addressedness, thematization, expressiveness, and compositional organization function as system-forming elements of the genre organization of a media text, shaping its discursive nature. It has been shown that individuality reflects the specific linguistic persona of the author; addressedness provides the pragmatic motivation of the text; thematization establishes its topical affiliation; expressiveness creates evaluativity; and compositional organization is linked to structure, cohesion, and the typology of the dicteme (discourse unit). The results demonstrate that these features exist in close interrelation, simultaneously ensuring both the genre stability and dynamism of media texts. Finally, it is proven that genreness is one of the leading textual categories, the study of which is a topical issue in contemporary linguistics.
