Abstract

The aim of the study is to identify patterns in the selection of strategies for sight translation when conveying cohesive devices in discourse and to reveal the factors that determine these patterns. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that it is the first comprehensive study of strategies for the oral translation of discourse markers, simultaneously taking into account various types of logical‑semantic cohesion, the status of the connector, and semantic complexity under time pressure. The study found that when semantic content is normal and a connector is present, translators make a minimal number of mistakes. However, increased semantic complexity shifts the focus of attention to the difficult element, which reduces the quality of cohesion. In cases where no connector is present, the prevailing strategy is to maintain non‑coordinated linkage. Yet when semantic complexity is present, the variability of strategies increases, along with the risk of selecting an incorrect connector. The most detrimental effect on cohesion occurs when an incorrect connector is combined with a complex element: being under cognitive overload, the translator tends to save time on analyzing logical relations. This leads to the selection of an inadequate strategy and reduces the variability of solutions.
