Closer Than the Jugular Vein: A Relativistic Interpretation of Divine Nearness Using the Null Interval of Light
Abstract
The Quranic verse "And We are closer to him than his jugular vein" (Surah Qaf 50:16) speaks of a divine nearness that transcends physical distance and time. This paper explores a scientific analogy from Einstein's special relativity, where a photon-a particle of light-travels vast distances yet experiences zero time and zero spatial separation in its own frame, a phenomenon called the null interval. We propose that this behavior of light offers a physical metaphor for divine omnipresence: just as a photon is "already there" without needing to move, divine presence is infinitely close without requiring travel. Written for a general audience, this paper explains all physics concepts (e.g., space-time interval, speed of light) in simple terms and connects them to the Quranic concept of closeness, fostering dialogue between science and spirituality.
