Evolution of Formula 1 Engine
Abstract
Formula 1 represents the pinnacle of automotive engineering, continuously pushing the boundaries of performance, efficiency, and technological innovation. This paper explores the evolution of Formula 1 engines from the early naturally aspirated and supercharged configurations of the 1950s to the highly advanced turbo-hybrid power units used in the modern era. Key developments such as the Cosworth DFV era, the turbocharged dominance of the 1980s, the V10 and V8 atmospheric engines, and the current V6 hybrid systems with energy recovery technologies are examined in detail. The study also discusses the mechanical principles behind engine operation, turbocharging, and hybrid components such as the MGU-K and MGU-H. Additionally, recent regulatory changes aimed at improving sustainability, including the introduction of fully sustainable fuels and increased electrical power output, are analyzed along with their potential challenges. Through this historical and technical review, the paper highlights how Formula 1 engine innovation has influenced both motorsport performance and broader automotive engineering advancements.
