Abstract

The Everyday Measures of Temporal Emotions (EMOTE) Database (emotedatabase.com) is an open, searchable repository of experience-sampling data. Experience sampling allows researchers to capture dynamic processes as they unfold in daily life. However, collecting experience-sampling data is costly and complex. EMOTE removes these barriers, allowing researchers to request experience-sampling data for reanalysis, and to deposit data for others to use to answer new questions. We demonstrate EMOTE’s potential by reporting large-scale analyses testing foundational questions (Ns=2,369-2,834 participants;167,811-190,972 surveys), investigating gender differences in daily emotions, diurnal and weekly patterns in emotions, and measurement reactivity. Our results demonstrate how daily-life data may deviate from global reports, illustrate the potential for large-scale analysis to resolve debates, and counter concerns about measurement reactivity. More broadly, EMOTE advances the open-science mission, enhances replicability, enables well-powered investigation of complex questions, and ultimately, helps build a cumulative psychological science of everyday life.
