Abstract

This research note identifies and quantifies the exposure of EU hotel accommodation and revenue to projected water stress by 2030, combining WRI Aqueduct 4.0 projections with Eurostat data across 235 NUTS-2 regions in 26 countries. Results show that 68 regions (28.9%) are projected to experience High or Extremely High water stress, containing 2.19 million hotel rooms (36.1% of EU capacity). Extremely High stress regions alone account for 1.62 million rooms (26.7%). Total annual hotel revenue capacity is estimated at €177.7 billion, of which €69.8 billion (39.2%) is generated in High or Extremely High stress regions and €52.3 billion (29.4%) in Extremely High stress regions. Exposure is highly concentrated in Mediterranean countries.
