Implementation of a radar for vehicles using computer vision
Abstract
The objective of this study is to develop a system capable of calculating the speed of a vehicle using computer vision. Compared to traditional radar technologies, this system presents significant advantages, particularly in terms of cost as well as ease of installation and maintenance. For the measurement process, time and distance data were employed; specifically, vehicle speed was calculated when the vehicle entered and exited the camera frame, and this was further complemented by a laser sensor to determine the opening distance. Regarding the computational techniques, the implemented algorithms included background subtraction and edge detection; notably, the former demonstrated superior performance and a lower error rate. Furthermore, a web platform was developed to record and visualize the collected data, thereby facilitating the analysis of captured events, enabling the inclusion of annotations on detected speeds, and providing a user-friendly interface for monitoring. Overall, this system offers a viable and cost-effective alternative for vehicular traffic control.
