Role of Artificial Intelligence in Revolutionizing Lesson Plan for teaching: A Systematic Review
Abstract
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in school education is becoming increasingly important. It has significant effects on various dimensions of education system such as instructional practices, assessment strategies, and administrative processes. It also plays a vital role in instructional design or lesson plan. However no systematic review studies focus on summarising research on the role of AI in lesson planning. For this reason, this study aims to systematically review research on the use of AI for lesson planning. The researchers performed a systematic review according to the PRISMA statement. A systematic search was used across IEEE Explore, BASE, ERIC, DOAJ and Science Direct to identify peer reviewed articles spanning from 1 January 2010 to 30 March 2026.Keywords used were “AI or Artificial Intelligence, Generative AI” and “Lesson Plan or Instructional design” and “School”. A total of 627 titles and abstracts were screened for eligibility, of which 29 articles met eligibility criteria for full text review. Following a more detailed screening, 21 articles met the criteria for inclusion in the systematic review. The findings indicate that AI provides significant advantages, like reducing time in material creation, boosting creativity in pedagogy and streamlined lesson organisation. This study reveals that most of the in-service and pre-service teachers use AI tools like Gemini, ChatGPT and Microsoft copilot and magic school AI for designing the lesson plan. However, application of AI tools comes with several challenges such as inconsistent quality and less contextual relevance, necessitating proper human oversight and evaluation.
