Contemporary issues in implementing extracurricular physical education activities in general secondary schools
Abstract
The article examines contemporary issues in implementing extracurricular physical education activities in general secondary schools in Ukraine, particularly in the context of the "New Ukrainian School" (NUS) reform and the introduction of a competency-based approach. The relevance of the topic stems from the need to develop key competencies in students, particularly health-preserving ones, through the integration of curricular and extracurricular forms of activity. The author examines the features of the model physical education curriculum, structured on a modular principle, which enables individualized learning but faces challenges such as low student motivation, insufficient teacher training, lack of a comprehensive approach, and inadequate material and technical support. Particular emphasis is placed on the crucial role of extracurricular forms (sports clubs, sections, electives, competitions, including the "Plich-o-Plich and All-Ukrainian School Leagues" project) in enhancing motivation, developing soft skills, and fostering a sustained need for physical activity. It is substantiated that extracurricular activities serve as a vital resource for effectively implementing NUS ideas in the field of physical education, especially in the context of national requirements for physical preparedness amid martial law conditions. The study highlights the necessity of rethinking traditional approaches to physical education, shifting focus from mere development of physical qualities to forming life competencies, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and responsible health choices.
