Abstract

The article is devoted to the development and theoretical substantiation of a five-stage model of sports rehabilitation for basketball players after musculoskeletal injuries, taking into account the biomechanical and functional specifics of the sport. The relevance of the study is determined by the high incidence of injuries among basketball athletes caused by the dynamic nature of movements, repeated jumps, rapid direction changes, and contact interactions. The paper systematizes modern scientific approaches to phase-based rehabilitation and generalizes leading international and domestic models of post-injury recovery in athletes. The biomechanical characteristics of basketball that require special consideration in rehabilitation programs are identified, including multiplanar movement patterns, alternation of static and dynamic loads, and the crucial role of trunk and lower limb stabilizer muscles. Based on the analysis of literature sources and practical experience in physical therapy, a structured five-stage model of rehabilitation is proposed. It includes: (1) the acute phase – pain and inflammation control, prevention of muscle atrophy; (2) early activation – restoration of joint mobility and proprioceptive stimulation; (3) functional strength phase – development of neuromuscular control and load tolerance; (4) sports integration – simulation of basketball-specific movement patterns, jumps, accelerations, and decelerations; (5) return-to-play phase – assessment of physical, functional, and psychological readiness. Each stage includes clear objectives, exercise methods, and criteria for progression between phases. The principles of gradual load progression, individualization, and integration of preventive strategies into the rehabilitation process are justified. A set of functional tests is proposed to assess readiness for return to play, including symmetry of muscle strength, balance stability, jump testing, the Y-Balance test, and the Psychological Readiness to Return to Sport Scale (PRRS). The results indicate that the implementation of the five-stage model promotes a safe and efficient return of basketball players to training and competition, minimizes the risk of re-injury, and enhances the preventive component of rehabilitation. The developed model can be effectively applied in sports medicine, physical therapy, and coaching practice to optimize recovery quality and maintain athletes’ long-term performance and health.
