DESENVOLVIMENTO DE PLANTIOS DE Carapa guianensis Aubl. NA REGIÃO DE SANTARÉM-PA, BRASIL
Abstract
Development of Carapa guianensis Aubl. plantations in the Santarém region, Pará, Brazil ABSTRACT: This study analyzed the dendrometric development of Carapa guianensis plantations in the Santarém region, Pará, aiming to support silvicultural management practices. A total of 130 trees aged 11, 13, and 17 years were evaluated, collecting data on diameter at breast height (DBH), canopy diameter (CD), total height, commercial height, and canopy insertion height. The results indicated the onset of intraspecific competition from age 11, evidenced by the stabilization of mean DBH and CD, while height growth continued. The Crown Coverage Index confirmed full site occupancy, with mean crown diameters (~6 m) exceeding the initial spacing of 5.5 m. Although most stems were straight (>85%), crown quality declined with increasing stand density, indicating competitive stress. Structural variability increased with age, reflecting the differentiation of dominant and suppressed tree classes. The DBH–CD relationship showed a strong fit (R² up to 0.81), serving as a useful indicator for planning silvicultural interventions. It is concluded that the species exhibits survival mechanisms under competitive stress and that early and successive pruning and thinning, guided by the DBH–CD relationship, are essential to mitigate competition and ensure sustainable diameter growth.
