Abstract

The purpose of this article is to assess trends in food security, physical and economic accessibility of food in the Republic of Dagestan, and to substantiate directions for strengthening food security. The study period covers 2015-2023. The current state of the agricultural sector of the republic is analyzed. The dynamics of indicators of food production and consumption per capita, the level of self-sufficiency in food is presented. It is indicated that Dagestan is gradually strengthening its position in the Russian food market by increasing the volume of agricultural production. The regional problems of ensuring the physical and economic accessibility of food are revealed. Studies have shown that the key limitation of physical accessibility is the poor development of the commodity distribution infrastructure. High inflation and low solvency of the population pose a threat to the economic availability of food. In conclusion, the most vulnerable areas of the regional agrarian economy are identified and recommendations are made to strengthen food security in the republic in the long term: adaptation to climate change, technical and technological modernization, and sustainable development of mountainous territories; improving the economic mechanism of management, developing commodity distribution and transport infrastructure, curbing food inflation, and a balanced agrarian and social policy.
