Abstract

Sporotrichosis is a fungal zoonosis that primarily affects cats. However, it has also been identified in other species, such as dogs, which typically present a lower fungal load. The disease is caused by Sporothrix sp., a dimorphic fungus found in the environment. This article reports the case of a one-year-old male German Spitz dog that presented with a small, localized lesion that rapidly expanded. Clinical evaluation, together with laboratory tests, was essential for the diagnosis of canine sporotrichosis. The patient was treated with a combination of two antifungal drugs, itraconazole and potassium iodide, until lesion remission, followed by continued itraconazole therapy for an additional 60 days until complete lesion resolution. Therefore, it is essential that veterinary clinicians remain aware of possible diagnoses, even in non-endemic areas, as this ensures timely and effective treatment, reduces treatment duration, promotes animal welfare, and contributes to epidemiological control.
