A Successful Pregnancy and Live Birth after Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection with Globozoospermic Sperm and Artificial Oocyte Activation
Abstract
Globozoospermia is a rare form of teratozoospermia still challenging the success of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). The use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) with artificial oocyte activation (AOA) with an adapted medium containing calcium ionophore made parenthood possible for couples facing fertilization failure with conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF). Nevertheless, no consensus exists about AOA protocols, making this technique difficult to reproduce. We report the case of a patient with total globozoospermia with successful pregnancy and live birth after a single cycle of ICSI using AOA. Although successful, more research and understanding are required about the use of this method, as fertilization success also depends on multiple other factors and as the impact on long-term child development is still unknown.
