Abstract

Relevance. The issue of the effectiveness of sports and recreational activities and cybersports in the context of counteracting enhanced stress-generating factors (digitalization of society, military actions on the territory of the country) causes increased interest of researchers. And if the effectiveness of sports and recreational activities for student youth has been repeatedly proven by experts, the effectiveness of e-sports continues to remain a debatable issue. The purpose of the study was to identify factors that influence the stress resistance of higher education students (using the example of higher education applicants in the specialty 017 Physical Education and Sports) and to investigate the role of e-sports in the structure of their stress resistance. Material and methods of the study. 107 higher education applicants of the National University for Physical Education and Sports of Ukraine participated in the study. 57.9 % (n = 62) of them were boys, the remaining 42.6 % (n = 45) were girls. At the same time, the proportion of e-sports athletes was 16.8 % (n = 18) of the total sample. The study used validated psychodiagnostics methods: short Depression Scale DEPS, stress resistance scale (BRS), physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ), the author's technique for assessing the psycho-emotional state. We used the SMOTE technique (Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique) to balance the input data by belonging to cyber sports. Results The study found that e-sports athletes had had statistically significantly (p < 0.05) lower physical activity levels, higher levels of depression, and reduced stress tolerance compared to representatives of other sports. Multivariate modeling showed that the main predictors of stress tolerance are the level of depression, psychoemotional state, and gender of higher education applicants, while e-sports classes had not demonstrated a direct independent effect. The nonlinear nature of the relationship between depression and stress tolerance of higher education applicants was revealed. The effect of bad habits on the stress tolerance of higher education applicants was statistically insignificant (p > 0.05). Conclusions. E-sports classes are not a direct risk factor for reducing stress tolerance of higher education applicants, and increasing their stress tolerance by means of e-sports is questionable. The priority of psychoprophylaxis should be the correction of depressive states and increasing physical activity. The results emphasize the need for further study of the mediated mechanisms of the influence of e-sports classes on the stress resistance of higher education applicants.
