Assessment of business partnership risks
Abstract
In a changing economic environment, choosing a reliable business partner is critical for any organization striving for sustainable development and risk mitigation. An incorrect choice can lead not only to financial losses but also to irreparable damage to reputation, slow growth, and even lead to bankruptcy. This article aims to provide an overview of modern methods and tools that enable organizations to objectively assess the feasibility of collaborating with potential partners. The review focuses on a risk-based approach, which involves a comprehensive analysis and assessment of various risk categories that may arise during the interaction. Financial risks associated with the partner’s solvency, credit history, and financial stability are examined in detail. An assessment of legal risks is also important, with particular attention to compliance risks, which encompass issues of compliance with anti-corruption laws, sanctions regimes, and ethical business practices. Furthermore, analyzing reputational threats is essential, as partnering with a company with a questionable reputation can undermine the trust of clients, investors, and other stakeholders. This article presents the stages of the process for evaluating potential partners. The first stage involves screening, which helps eliminate unsuitable candidates based on publicly available information and basic criteria. Due diligence is an in-depth review that includes a detailed examination of the potential partner’s financial, legal, operational, and commercial information. The final stage is a detailed risk analysis, which comprehensively assesses all identified risks, their likelihood, and potential impact on the business. Based on the analysis results, an informed decision is made on the feasibility of cooperation. The recommendations presented in this article are aimed at ensuring reliable protection of business assets by preventing risks associated with fraud, unfair competition, and breach of contract, as well as streamlining the entire partner selection process.
