Abstract

An analyst chooses a specific elicitation method since it is the only method with which practitioners are acquainted. The authors intend to assess the influence of project and human attributes in selecting the Requirement Elicitation Technique (RET). The study emphasizes the effects of the number of stakeholders, number of functional points, project duration, requirement elicitation duration, experience of the elicitor in requirement elicitation, and overall experience of the elicitor in the software domain on the selection of RETs. The authors conducted a content analysis of 54 articles to assess the influence of these variables on RET selection. The study used VOSviewer to perform the content analysis. The study findings suggested that the longer the project duration is, the greater the chance of selecting a workshop technique. The possibility of choosing a focus group is greater when the business analyst encounters multiple functionalities. The study corroborated that project characteristics and human attributes were dominant when choosing RET.It optimizes the RET decision-making process. This allows practitioners to choose RET under challenging project situations. The challenges may be in the form of multiple stakeholders, many functional points, and a project with a longer duration. Regardless of project complexity, the requirement engineers can resolve RET selection issues in comparatively less time. The technique selection framework can act as project guideline documents such as the business analyst body of knowledge (BABOK) and project management body of knowledge (PMBOK). BABOK and PMBOK suggest best practices for practitioners while developing software projects.
