Abstract

The Indonesia-Malaysia border region in West Kalimantan is a dynamic area characterized by intensive cultural and linguistic interactions. The prevailing paradigm regarding Malaysia's economic dominance has the potential to spark debates concerning national identity, particularly in language use. Therefore, this research aims to conduct an in-depth analysis and propose a linguistic landscape concept for the West Kalimantan-Indonesia border with Malaysia, based on aspects of local wisdom. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method, collecting visual and textual data from public signs through observation and documentation. Data analysis utilized two functions of linguistic landscapes: the informational and symbolic functions. The research findings indicate that in the informational domain, Indonesian predominates as the official communication tool, supported by foreign languages (English). Meanwhile, English and local ethnic languages such as Mandarin, Dayak Bidayuh, and Sambas Malay reinforce cultural identity. The symbolic function is reflected in the use of language to assert national sovereignty, governmental roles, and the manifestation of local wisdom, including prayers, customs, traditional poetry, and community commercial endeavors. The proposed policy reconsolidation includes bilingual or multilingual signage to strengthen local identity, enhance cultural understanding, and reinforce social integration in the border region. This approach aims to preserve cultural diversity while simultaneously strengthening the national narrative in Indonesia.
