Impact of supervision of microfinance institutions on small and medium enterprises in Nigeria
Abstract
This paper investigates how the supervision of microfinance institutions (MFIs) impacts the performance and growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. The survey research method was applied via a structured questionnaire. The study also utilized structural equation modeling (SEM) to explore the link between MFI supervision and SME performance. Using a stratified random sampling method, data were gathered from 396 SMEs in Bauchi State, Nigeria. The results indicate that the relationships between MFI supervision and revenue growth, market expansion, employment generation, and business sustainability are positive and statistically significant. That is, a 1% increase in MFI supervision leads to 74%, 67%, 67%, and 82% increases in revenue growth, market expansion, employment generation, and business sustainability, respectively, which in turn results in 61%, 65%, 71%, and 89% increases in overall SME growth. To optimize SME growth, it is essential to continuously enhance the supervision of MFIs, ensuring that the support provided is not only financial but also strategic in areas such as market expansion, employment generation, and sustainability. In summary, the study underscores the critical role of MFI supervision in driving various facets of SME development, including revenue growth, market expansion, employment generation, and business sustainability, all of which collectively contribute to the overall growth and success of SMEs. The study recommends that a more collaborative approach between government agencies, MFIs, and SMEs can foster an environment where financial services are effectively utilized to promote long-term growth and development. Governments and financial institutions should prioritize the development of employment-focused programs within MFIs to encourage the growth of SMEs. Finally, we recommend that Policymakers and financial institutions collaborate to create programs that help SMEs adopt sustainable business practices, such as eco-friendly initiatives or long-term financial planning.
